Chapter 17

Sayuri

“Are you ready for next week?” Ciara asks as I sit down at our usual table. Her tray is loaded full of fried chicken, french fries and a chocolate milkshake.

I shrug outwardly, but my mind reels. Liam and I will be in the same room in a week.

“Yeah, it’s a rare occasion when all the Murphys are together. Sean will be there too.” She searches my eyes. She has a look. She knows something happened between us the night of the party, and she has been waiting for me to tell her.

What can I say?

I know I need to forget Sean. I force myself to think about something else, but every time he seeps back into my thoughts. It’s a constant trickle, an incessant drip in the back of my mind. How could I forget the weight of his body pressed to mine? I can’t stop thinking about how his hand felt moving between my thighs, the way his face twisted into ecstasy when he screamed my name. I keep touching myself thinking about it, and now I’m drowning.

My only salvation is Liam’s death.

Then I can be alone again and forget I ever knew the Murphys.

I will leave for Japan.

I will change my name.

Sean will forget me.

But I don’t want to be alone anymore.

Pain slams into me like a knife. It’s so unexpected and foreign to me that I have no defenses against it and a hot tear rolls down my cheek.

Merde! For the first time in my life, I want more than revenge. I can’t even name what I want because just the thought of it is so fucking crazy.

“Are you okay?” Ciara sees me before I can hide.

“I’m good ... allergies.” I blink my eyes and get my emotions into check. She doesn’t buy it, so I bury my head in my phone and laugh a little too loudly at a meme Sonia sent this morning.

“You think Pierce will be back today?” Patrick asks, as he sits next to us.

“I hope so. I should really thank him for that rumor about me being a bad lay.” I sweep our empty table. “With him and Thornton gone, we have been boy drama free for almost a whole week.”

Pierce hasn’t been back to school since Monday, claiming to have the flu—it must be as bad as his rhymes. I see the faces of the kids that walk by us and they look bored. For once, we are not the subjects of conversation. I could get used to this.

“Everyone knows we are behind poetry-gate.” Patrick smirks. “So now, they think you’re crazy.”

“A crazy, bad lay. Who’d wanna fuck with that?” I laugh.

“I volunteer as tribute.”

I throw straw wrapper trash from the table at him.

“Don’t get too comfortable guys, this feels like the calm before the storm.” Ciara looks excited and dips her french fry into her chocolate milkshake and takes a bite.

“And I am going to enjoy the calm part as much as possible. My happy place is drama free and full of fish.
